You Know That Cold Feeling you Feel?
Posted on July 27, 2010 · Leave a CommentIt’s them…
That famous quote from the Sixth Sense has always had me wonder. Do ghosts really exist? When you ask some people around Fort Lauderdale they’d say, “yes!” The city you live in is very historic and it was established a long time ago. There are many ghosts stories and “encounters” that people have and always willing tell.
So your Alexan Solmar community would like to ask you have you been on the Mystery River and Hour Tour or any Fort Lauderdale Ghost Tour? The Mystery River and House tour takes places at the Stranahan House and will run through August every Sunday. A couple of you and some friends could get together and have an “eerie” night out on the town. For more information call 954-524-4736.
Tour the house while listening to the results of the paranormal teams investigations and the history of the people that lived here. Hear about the colorful characters that once lived along the banks of the river and occasionally come back to visit
If you’re looking for more ghost tours you can tour Old Fort Lauderdale with the Fort Lauderdale Ghost Tour. The tours take place on the weekends and include private tours if you reserve them.
Do our residents of Alexan Solmar believe in ghosts?

Being Prepared for the Weather
Posted on July 21, 2010 · Leave a CommentFt. Lauderdale is closing in on hurricane season and us Floridians need to be prepared. The weather can get pretty crazy here and if we’re not properly prepared it wouldn’t be pretty. That’s the beauty of Florida isn’t it though? With a great location and mostly great weather comes the bad spurts. Remember these few tips on being prepared for the weather!
- Do as your told- If you’re told to evacuate your area during bad weather, please do as your told and evacuate as soon as you can.
- Create a Plan- If you aren’t told to evacuate you still need to prepare. Where are you supposed to go in case the weather gets foul? Do you have a central area to go to? Follow up on those questions
- Supply Kit- Make a kit of supplies; first aid, food, blankets, water… full list
Keep an eye out on the weather and be prepared always!

Searching…

When it comes to search engines I’m an avid user of Google.com. I don’t know what it is but I always go to it, I’m loyal. It’s not out of habit it’s because Google is dependable. I know there are different search engines out there like Bing (the newest addition) and Yahoo (old favorite for some). So what do you use? Is it Google, Yahoo or Bing for you? Vote on our poll and let us know what you use! Comment below if you don’t see your search engine listed.

Budget Healthy Food
Posted on July 12, 2010 · Leave a CommentWhen I moved into my first apartment I remember being so tight with my money. I didn’t want to move back to my parents’ house so I made sure I saved as much as I could. This of course limited me to the activities I participated in and mostly importantly the food I ate. I couldn’t have a steak dinner every night at my favorite steak house. I had to cook my own meals. While I’m okay with cooking my meals I had to be picky about what I bought.
I didn’t want to eat junk food and bad meals so I had to buy smart, healthy food and on a budget! I found that peanut butter was great and eggs were even better. They could go a long way in my apartment and at a great price!
Now that I’m older and I have better spending habits (and more money) I could buy those crazy items…from time to time. But when it comes to food I still buy healthy food on a budget! You should too…here’s a great list of yummy budget friendly food.
Peanut Butter- Eggs
- Oats
- Spinach
- Canned Tuna
- Beans
- Frozen Vegetables
- Apples
- Sweet Potatoes
- Brown Rice

Posted on July 6, 2010 · Leave a CommentFt. Lauderdale is known for their art. You’ve got festivals, small boutiques, vendors, you name it our town probably has it. I really enjoy taking some time out of my weekend to enjoy the art around town. It’s a great way to relax. From time to time I’ll take a friend and we’ll enjoy the art together but usually I’ll have the day to myself and I became a member of the Museum of Art Ft. Lauderdale a few years ago and I haven’t looked back since.
For those of you who aren’t members the Museum of Art Ft. Lauderdale is having a Two-for-One Deal! You can buy one ticket and get the second FREE! You’ll have the opportunity to view the Pearl and Stanley Goodman Latin American Collection. This deal lasts until Sept. 30, 2010! The Museum of Art Ft. Lauderdale is located off of NE E. Saturday Night Alive!
Posted on July 1, 2010 · Leave a CommentThis Saturday marks the beginning of Saturday Night Alive! During the month of July on Saturdays you can see A1A become a craft and art venue with street performers and live music! This event begins at 7:00 p.m. and lasts until 11:00 p.m.
I’ve always enjoyed a great festival, you get the best crafts and art for your apartment when you go and visit. The goal in my apartment at Alexan Solmar is to have a local and original piece of art in every room. I think it’s achievable and well unique. While I don’t knock buying art and crafts from stores I like the idea of having one piece of something original. Keep in mind I only said one item, I still have some of my favorite art from stores like Target!
What a better way to celebrate the 4th of July then with the beginning of Saturday Night Alive!

5 ways to Beat that Summer Heat!
Posted on June 28, 2010 · Leave a CommentWe all know it can get pretty hot outside, especially because of the fact that we live in Florida. We wake up to the warm weather and come home to an afternoon shower. Sometimes I feel as if I cannot bear another hot day but then I think about coming home to apartment and I’m relaxed. Why? I’ve take some measures in order to make my apartment a bit cooler. How else am I going to fight off this heat? I could always go to Alexan Solmar’s pool and take a dip into the pool but some days I’d rather stay inside. Here’s how I do it!
Sunlight- While waking up to the rising sun is beautiful, the sun’s heat can make your apartment really warm. Leaving your blinds and curtains open causes your apartment to heat up. This will cause your AC to constantly run. What does that mean? A higher bill…so turn your blinds in some and cool your space down.- Turning off those Gadgets- If you have everything on and running in your apartment, it’s going to get hot. Why? When you run an electronic it’s going to give off some heat. And like my mother always says, it all adds up.
- Textures- You know how you get a cozy feeling when you add throw blankets to your apartment? It also adds a warm feeling, which makes you feel hot. Try putting those blankets away and cool down your mind.
- Lights- The brighter your apartment is, the warmer it is. Turn off those lights during the day and keep it to a minimum while you’re home.
- Fans- A fan will always help the heat in your apartment. I use an upright fan in my aparmtent, it was definitely worth the investment.
What do you do to keep your apartment cool in this Florida heat?
