Barefoot Running…

I’m a runner…there’s no doubt about it, I enjoy running! In high school I used to run Cross Country… while many would say Cross Country is for the insane I think it’s great! Running gives me time for me… I have the time to think over issues and I have time to just be, it’s mind-easing.
If you’re a runner like me, then you know what it takes to have a good shoe. There are so many factors to think of when it comes to a good running shoe. Is it light enough? Do I have enough arch support? Will I have enough cushion for my feet?
Recently I’ve thought about throwing all those questions away and getting some…Vibram Five Fingers! I’d be wearing gloves for my feet! There’d be no reliance on arch support or cushion. I’d depend on my feet…the way I was supposed to! I’d condition and train my feet to become stronger and healthier
The typical human foot is an anatomical marvel of evolution with 26 bones, 33 joints, 20 muscles, and hundreds of sensory receptors, tendons and ligaments. Like the rest of the body, to keep our feet healthy, they need to be stimulated and exercised.

Budget Healthy Food

When I moved into my first apartment I remember being so tight with my money. I didn’t want to move back to my parents’ house so I made sure I saved as much as I could. This of course limited me to the activities I participated in and mostly importantly the food I ate. I couldn’t have a steak dinner every night at my favorite steak house. I had to cook my own meals. While I’m okay with cooking my meals I had to be picky about what I bought.
I didn’t want to eat junk food and bad meals so I had to buy smart, healthy food and on a budget! I found that peanut butter was great and eggs were even better. They could go a long way in my apartment and at a great price!
Now that I’m older and I have better spending habits (and more money) I could buy those crazy items…from time to time. But when it comes to food I still buy healthy food on a budget! You should too…here’s a great list of yummy budget friendly food.
Peanut Butter- Eggs
- Oats
- Spinach
- Canned Tuna
- Beans
- Frozen Vegetables
- Apples
- Sweet Potatoes
- Brown Rice

Biking in Ft. Lauderdale!

I’ve recently taken up mountain biking and I’m really starting to enjoy it! It’s a lot of fun and great exercise, and I don’t even notice that I’m exercising! I’ve always loved a challenge and while I was looking for biking trails I found Markham Park. It’s a biking trail not for the newbies, but I’m determined to learn how to bike well on this trail! The bridges, drops and trails require lots of courage and well ability. While I’ve got scrapes and bruises to prove that I’m still a newbie, I’m getting better and better by the day!
Markham Park is about 7 to 10 miles long and it includes single, double track trails. Markham Park is about 30 minutes from Alexan Solmar!

Nap-Time

Don’t you wish we could all go back to those days when our parents required us to take a nap? I use to do everything in my power not to take a nap when I was little, but now I wish someone would institute a grown-up nap-time. The Boston Globe recently published an article about how beneficial naps are. Here are a few of the benefits to napping!
-A Slew of studies have shown that naps boost alertness, creativity, mood, and productivity in the later hours of the day
- A Nap of 60 minutes improves alertness for up to 10 hours
-Research on pilots shows that a 26-min nap in flight (while the plane is manned by the copilot) enhanced performance by 34% and overall alertness by 54 %
-One Harvard study published this year showed that a 45-minute nap improves learning and memory.
-Napping reduces stress and lowers the risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes and excessive weight gain

That quote is from Barry Magee (New Zealander Runner and Coach Olympic medalist,) And while he may think anyone can do it I prefer to watching marathons rather than running them. So this weekend when the A1A Marathon comes to Ft. Lauderdale I will be there cheering and watching. It is very inspiring to see the well trained athletes and even some of the not so trained. The runners range from young kids to people who’ve been AARP members for as long as I’ve been alive. Check it out for yourself on Sunday. It’s great to cheer people on throughout the course but I love seeing the people come across the finish line. Here are some parking options if you’d like to be at the finish line
1. Ocean Side Parking Lot – A1A and East Las Olas
2. Birch Las Olas Lot – under Las Olas Bridge
3. Alexander Lot – SE 5th St. and A1A
($) – standard rates apply
Check out the A1A website for more details and for a schedule of events.
Eat Right for Your Type

Have you ever noticed that some foods just don’t seem to agree with you. Or have you noticed that those run of the mill diets don’t really work for you. I was on the South Beach diet a couple months ago and I was following it perfectly. The first stage of the diet cuts out a lot of carbs. but as you move into the other stages you can start adding in whole grains. Well I had a little weight loss in the first phase but when I started adding whole wheat products to my diet I gained a lot of weight really fast. Meanwhile my boyfriend was loosing a couple pounds a week. I didn’t get it
A friend brought it to my attention that I might not be on the right diet for my blood type. My first reaction was that they were crazy. What would my blood type have to do with anything? Well I read up on the matter and it began to make more since. If you think about it your blood is what caries nutrients through your body. It’s also what fights off diseases so the type of blood just might have something to do with your daily health regimen.
I found out that I am O positive. I then read what foods were good and bad for O’s and on my bad list was wheat products! That makes since as to why I was gaining so much weight on the South Beach Diet. Since reading the book I’ve heard a lot of mixed review on whether there is such a thing as eating right for your blood type. But I’ve found that I feel better when I follow these tips and to me that is all that matters. Check out the book and see for yourself. http://www.dadamo.com/
Drugs in the Olympics

Thirty Olympic athletes will not be able to compete in the games because they have failed their drug tests. Details about who failed and what countries they represent have not been released.
This year’s drug screening was the most intense screening in history. The blood and urine samples will even go into a bank and will be kept for 8 years so if they come up with any new technology or if suspicions arise they can go back and re-test the samples. The Olympics committee has a no tolerance policy. How do you feel about athletes who don’t play by the rules?

Have you ever noticed that colors seem to evoke an emotion in you? There are certain colors that I tend to gravitate too, but our attraction to certain colors may be able to reveal information about ourselves. I studied this theory in psychology class and found it fascinating. The idea is: the colors that appeal to you can tell a lot about the emotional state you are in. Here is an online color quiz. See what it says about you!
